Review of ChaCha Natural Roasted Sunflower Seeds, Salted (Семечки натуральной обжарки подсолнуха соленые)

Flavor : 5/5     This seed is truly something special. I was not expecting this unflavored seed to have the amount of natural flavor notes that it does. There are delicious notes of smoke, and the shell has a nice roasted flavor as well as earthy undertones. The salt itself on the shell has a wonderful sea salt flavor, and has a distinct taste from any salt I have ever had on a sunflower seed before. The kernel itself has a great classic sunflower taste, which really brings this seed together.  Salt : 5/5     The salt on this seed appears to have been applied by means of a saltwater brine, which I have not seen before. The salt flavor is perfectly balanced, not too overpowering, but still salty. The most shocking part of this seed is the fact that it has only 0.27mg of sodium per gram of seed! That is the least amount of sodium I have seen on any seed reviewed thus far.  Seed Quality : 5/5     These seeds are of superb quality. The shells do not splinter, and are actually rather sof

Review of BiGS Taco Supreme Sunflower Seeds

Flavor : 1/5     The flavor of this seed is one of the worst added flavors I have ever tasted, period. The flavor added to the outside of the seed is so overpowering, it is hard to even comment on any flavor notes, however I will try. One of the notes that I can grasp at is that of chemicals, I am not sure what chemical, but it tastes as like I am eating a petroleum product. The only other flavor note that I can distinguish is artificial smoke favoring. If I had to describe the flavor in one word it would be "disgusting." Salt : 1/5     The salt of this seed gets the lowest possible score for two reasons. First reason, I cannot taste the salt whatsoever due to the muddling from the disgusting "taco" flavor. Second, the sodium levels in this bag are off of the charts. 33mg of sodium per 1 gram of seeds, not the highest that I have ever seen, but I can clearly see in the bag that no salt or flavoring has fallen off of the seeds to the bottom of the bag. For me not b

Review of Dollar Tree Salted Sunflower Seeds

Flavor : 4/5     These seeds have no flavoring on them, but they do have a flavor about them, as all sunflower seeds do. These seeds have a nice roasted flavor, not too strong but definitely noticeable. The kernel inside has a pleasant sunflower seed flavor, not anything fancy. Salt : 3/5     There is quite a bit of salt on these seeds. I do enjoy salt, so it is nice to have a good, salty seed every once in a while. There is too much salt on this seed to eat them consistently though, if you eat too many you will get a tongue burn that will last a few days. There is 6.3mg of sodium per gram of seeds according to the nutrition facts, but I feel as if that is very wrong. Seed Quality : 1/5     Small, round seeds. Broken seeds in the bag. Stems in the bag. A shell that is prone to splintering. Average seed length of around .45 inches or 11.4mm. A very, very low quality seed. Price : 4/5     The price of this bag was $1 for 6.56oz (186g). That comes out to be $0.15 per ounce, or $0.53 per

Review of Spitz Cracked Pepper Flavored Sunflower Seeds

Flavor : 4/5     The flavor of this seed really surprised me. The last Spitz seed I reviewed did not do well in the flavor department, but this one is really a turnaround. The flavoring is not exactly fresh black pepper, but if you blindfolded me and put one of these seeds in my mouth, I would know what it is supposed to be. There are notes of garlic and dried onion, with very mild hints of sour. The kernel has the typical Spitz notes of peanut. Salt : 3/5     The salt of this seed is really masked by all of the other flavors, so there is not much to comment on. There is about 21mg of sodium per gram of seeds, which is a decent amount. Seed Quality : 2/5     The average length of a seed in this bag is .5 inches or 12.7mm, which is a very small seed in my opinion. The seeds are very round as well. The shell does not seem to splinter easily, but there are a few broken shells in the bag. Price : 4/5      The price of this bag was $1.00 for 6oz (170.1g). That price comes out to $0.16 per o

Review of Spitz Dill Pickle Flavored Sunflower Seeds

Flavor : 2/5     First off, this seed does not taste like a pickle. The flavoring on the outside of the shell is poorly developed, and tastes almost solely of monosodium glutamate (MSG). MSG is fine, I actually enjoy the flavor that MSG adds to dishes, however it in no way tastes like a pickle. No notes of vinegar, no notes of cucumber. However, the kernel itself is not bad. The kernel has strong notes of peanut, although you have to get rid of all "pickle" flavoring before you can taste it. Salt : 2/5     This seed has 17mg of sodium per 1g of seed, but it is really outshined by the flavor of the MSG. A salt flavor would be very welcome on this seed, to give it a bit of texture flavor wise. Seed Quality : 2/5     The average length of a seed in this bag is 0.5 in or 12.7 mm. Which, compared to other brands of seeds, is very small. There are quite a few cracked seeds in the bag, but I could not find a stem. Luckily, the shell does not splinter easily. Much room for improvem

Review of Trader Joe's Nuts Roasted & Salted Sunflower Seeds

Flavor : 5/5     The flavor of this seed is very apparent from the first taste. Very prominent notes of butter, and not a whole lot else. If you like butter, you will love this seed. The flavor is always consistent as well. From bag to bag, from seed to seed, you will taste butter. There is an occasional seed that has notes of black pepper. You wouldn't think that these two flavors would go well together, but they compliment each other nicely. Salt : 4/5     The salt of this content is very subtle on the tongue. Some of the seeds taste almost unsalted, and some have a minimal flavor of salt. Personally I enjoy a seed with a lighter salt taste. Although the salt flavor is very low, there is 35mg of sodium per 1g of seeds, a very high amount. There does seem to be quite a bit of salt that has fallen of of the seeds and has settled at the bottom though. Seed Quality : 4/5     Quality of the seeds is rather good. The seeds themselves have nice thick hulls, the hulls do not splinter e

Sunflower Seed Review Criteria

Here I will explain the different criteria that I will be using in my reviews of sunflower seeds. Each type of seed will be reviewed on the flavor, salt, seed quality, price, and nutrition. Let's get started. Flavor :      Flavor is a very important part of any sunflower seed. This section is dedicated to flavor notes from the seed itself, as well as any flavoring that may be added to the outside of the seed.  Salt :     This section is reserved for the salt content of the seeds. Salt content is a crucial component to review because it truly can make or break a seed. A mediocre flavor seed with just the right amount of salt will out-perform a superbly flavored but overly salted seed any day of the week. Seed Quality :      In this section I will review the quality of the sunflower seed both inside and out. Length of seed, brittleness of shell, size of seed, etc.  Price :     This one may be a bit obvious. I will perform a price breakdown of the total cost of the sunflower
